Non-Surgical Facelifts (PDO Threads)
What is a Thread-Lift?
A thread-lift is also known as a non-surgical face-lift. It is a minimally invasive procedure that uses absorbable polydioxanone (PDO) threads to pull, lift, and support the skin in the face and neck. The threads used are designed to have anchors which help to suspend the skin, reducing any sagging areas in the face and neck. Due to the structure of the threads, a thread lift procedure also encourages the production of collagen. A higher production of collagen will result in a healthier and more youthful skin.
It is often used for non-surgical face lift with softening of the jawline, nasolabial folds and marionette line.
Mechanism of action
The PDO material stimulate the surrounding tissue to produce a lot of collagen fiber around the thread. In so doing it helps to pull the skin thereby lifting the sagging parts.
The inserted thread serves as scaffolding for the collagen and elastin fiber to be deposited in a predetermined fashion and arrangement.
The PDO technique is no more invasive than an injection. To ‘lift’ the jowls for example – a needle is inserted with thread in place, the needle is then removed leaving the thread to support and lift the tissue.
The PDO threads come in various shapes and sizes and your doctor will determine the appropriate number and type for each individual case at your consultation.
What happens after a thread lift procedure?
After the thread lift procedure, patients may experience minor swelling and bruising. However, the swelling and bruising will subside within a few days. Some patients may also experience minimal pain and numbness. But for most patients, there is minimal to no downtime required. Patients can continue with their day as normal after the thread lift procedure. Do note that it is advisable to refrain from vigorous physical activity immediately after the procedure.

Who is a thread-lift suitable for?
A thread lift procedure is suitable for both men and women with loose and hanging skin. Such individuals will benefit from a thread lift, as it is able to reverse premature aging without the need to undergo a surgical procedure. It is also perfect for people who are seeking a convenient, minimally invasive, and low risk alternative to the traditional face-lift.
Do note that the thread lift procedure is not suitable for those with thin and fragile skin, excessive sagging in the face and neck, and little facial fat. During a consultation session, the doctor will advise if a thread lift procedure is suitable for your skin condition.
Are there risks involved in a thread-lift procedure?
A thread lift procedure is known to be one of the safest cosmetic procedures in the market, provided it is performed by a professional and experienced doctor. As with any cosmetic procedure however, there is a low possibility of infection which can be treated with antibiotics. And, in some extremely rare cases, patients may experience numbness, a migration of sutures, and puckering of the skin.
